Recall Update as originally seen in Marlin Magazine August 13, 2003. There are still many of these generators in boats. If you suspect that your generator may be one of these mentioned below please call Hilltop Marine Service or any other authorized Kohler dealer immediately.
In an effort to replace a potentially deadly exhaust part that may have contributed to at least eight deaths, Kohler has initiated a voluntary recall of all of its marine generator sets powered by L600 or L654 gasoline engines. Manufactured between 1950 and 1989, the generators include the following model numbers: 2R, 2A, 2.5R, 2.5A, 3.5R, 3.5A, 4R, 4A, 5R, 5A, 6.5R, 6.5A, 7.5R, and 7.5A.
Court records indicate that hundreds of owners of boats equipped with older Kohler generators have been at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning due to an exhaust component that can deteriorate in the marine environment. Investigators found that the generator’s exhaust tube, made of black iron, had deteriorated from the inside out. While the outer surface seemed intact, the tube was damaged badly enough to allow exhaust gases to escape into a boat’s cabin. Ironically, initial design specifications called for a brass exhaust tube, costing $8 more than its black counterpart.
Kohler will make arrangements for repairs to these models. Boat owners having one of these Kohler models should not make any assumptions as whether the part has been replaced, but should immediately contact your authorized Kohler dealer, Hilltop Marine.

BOTTOM PAINT SECTION
Did you know if you keep your boat in the water for long periods of time that it is highly recommended to have your boat bottom painted? The reason for this is because bottom paint protects your boat from water blisters and from marine life growth on your hull. Repairing these Issues on a non-bottom painted boat can become more costly than the if the bottom paint had been done to begin with.
